Some of the Pharisees said, ‘This man is not from God,  because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath.’ But others were saying, ‘How can a sinful man  perform such signs? ’ And there was a division  among them.


But some of the Pharisees said, ‘Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath? ’


This is what the Lord says: Watch yourselves; do not pick up a load and bring it in through Jerusalem’s gates on the Sabbath day.


But the leader of the synagogue, indignant  because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, responded by telling the crowd, ‘There are six days when work should be done;  therefore come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath day.’


Then he said to them, ‘Is it lawful   to do good   on the Sabbath or to do evil,   to save life   or to kill? ’   But they were silent.


The Pharisees  said to him, ‘Look, why are they doing what is not lawful  on the Sabbath? ’


Therefore, the Jews began persecuting  Jesus  because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.


If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath   so that the law of Moses   won’t be broken, are you angry at me because I made a man entirely well on the Sabbath?


Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes.  And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.


But if you do not listen to me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying a load while entering the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, I will set fire to its gates,  and it will consume the citadels  of Jerusalem  and not be extinguished.” ’


‘If you avoid desecrating the Sabbath, from doing whatever you want on my holy day; if you call the Sabbath a delight, and the holy day of the  Lord  honourable; if you honour it, not going your own ways, seeking your own pleasure, or talking business;  ,


There he saw a man who had a shrivelled hand, and in order to accuse him they asked him, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? ’


This was John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem  sent priests  and Levites  to ask him, ‘Who are you? ’


He replied, ‘The man who made me well  told me, “Pick up your mat and walk.”  ’


The man went and reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
