This is the one I told you about: “After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.”


John answered them all,  ‘I baptise you with water, but one who is more powerful than I am is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptise you with  the Holy Spirit and fire.


He proclaimed, ‘One who is more powerful  than I am is coming after me.  I am not worthy  to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals.


‘I baptise you with  water for repentance,  but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove  his sandals. He himself will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.


(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, ‘This was the one of whom I said, “The one coming after me  ranks ahead of me,  because he existed before me.” ’)


Paul said, ‘John baptised with a baptism of repentance,  telling the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.’


that I will not take a thread or sandal strap or anything that belongs to you, so you can never say, “I made Abram rich.”


Many came to him  and said, ‘John never did a sign, but everything John said about this man was true.’


Now as John was completing his mission, he said, “Who do you think I am? I am not the one. But one is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet.”
