Furthermore, both people and animals must be covered with sackcloth, and everyone must call out earnestly to God.  Each must turn from his evil ways  and from his wrongdoing.


All Judah was standing before the Lord with their dependents, their wives, and their children.


You are to present a food offering to the Lord for seven days. On the eighth day you are to hold a sacred assembly and present a food offering to the Lord. It is a solemn assembly;  you are not to do any daily work.


Ezra  read out of the book of the law of God  every day, from the first day to the last. The Israelites celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day there was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.


Jehu commanded, ‘Consecrate a solemn assembly  for Baal.’ So they called one.

In the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month,  all the people of Jerusalem and all those coming in from Judah’s cities into Jerusalem proclaimed a fast before the Lord.


Hear this,  you elders; listen, all you inhabitants of the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your ancestors?


Then the people of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast  and dressed in sackcloth #– #from the greatest of them to the least.


Gather yourselves together; gather together, undesirable   nation,


Judah mourns; her city gates languish. Her people are on the ground in mourning; Jerusalem’s cry rises up.
