But they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They flung your law behind their backs and killed your prophets who warned them in order to turn them back to you. They committed terrible blasphemies.


who killed the Lord Jesus  and the prophets and persecuted us.  They displease God and are hostile to everyone,


Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute?  They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers  you have now become.


Lord, don’t your eyes look for faithfulness? You have struck them, but they felt no pain. You finished them off, but they refused to accept discipline. They made their faces harder than rock, and they refused to return.


Why do you want more beatings? Why do you keep on rebelling? The whole head is hurt, and the whole heart is sick.


‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous,


Therefore, declare to them, “This is the nation that would not listen to the Lord their God and would not accept discipline. Truth  has perished #– #it has disappeared from their mouths.


The people did not turn to him who struck them; they did not seek the  Lord of Armies.


and people were scorched by the intense heat. So they blasphemed the name of God,  who has the power  over these plagues, and they did not repent and give him glory.


She has not obeyed; she has not accepted discipline. She has not trusted  in the Lord; she has not drawn near to her God.


Because of the depravity of your uncleanness – since I tried to purify you, but you would not be purified from your uncleanness – you will not be pure again until I have satisfied my wrath on you.


I have surely heard Ephraim moaning, ‘You disciplined me, and I have been disciplined like an untrained calf. Take me back, so that I can return, for you, Lord, are my God.


But they kept ridiculing God’s messengers,  despising his words,  and scoffing at his prophets, until the Lord’s wrath was so stirred up against his people that there was no remedy.


At the time of his distress, King Ahaz himself became more unfaithful to the Lord.


But they conspired against him and stoned him at the king’s command in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple.


‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God of Armies,’ he replied, ‘but the Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they’re looking for me to take my life.’

For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, and your tongues mutter injustice.


Announce it in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol! Proclaim it in Memphis and in Tahpanhes! Say, ‘Take positions! Prepare yourself, for the sword devours all around you.’


Yet it happened because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who shed the blood of the righteous within her.


‘Son of man, say to her, “You are a land that has not been cleansed,  that has not received rain in the day of indignation.”


Just as it is written in the law of Moses,  all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favour of  the Lord our God by turning from our iniquities and paying attention to your truth.
