Egyptians are men, not God; their horses are flesh, not spirit. When the Lord raises his hand to strike, the helper will stumble and the one who is helped will fall; both will perish together.

Therefore the Lord does not rejoice over  Israel’s young men and has no compassion on its fatherless and widows, for everyone is a godless evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. In all this, his anger has not turned away, and his hand is still raised to strike.


Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’ in the presence of those who slay   you? Yet you will be only a man, not a god, in the hands of those who kill you.


You have left me.’ This is the  Lord’s declaration. ‘You have turned your back, so I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you. I am tired  of showing compassion.


Egypt’s help is completely worthless; therefore, I call her: Rahab Who Just Sits.


How then can you drive back a single officer among the least of my master’s servants? How can you rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?


Look, you are relying on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff  that will pierce the hand of anyone who grabs it and leans on it. This is how Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who rely on him.


everyone will be ashamed because of a people who can’t help. They are of no benefit, they are no help; they are good for nothing but shame and disgrace.


Leave them alone! They are blind guides.   And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.’


What will you do on the day of punishment when devastation comes from far away? Who will you run to for help? Where will you leave your wealth?


And the inhabitants of this coastland will say on that day, “Look, this is what has happened to those we relied on and fled to for help to rescue us from the king of Assyria! Now, how will we escape? ” ’


You say, ‘No! We will escape on horses’ – therefore you will escape! – and, ‘We will ride on fast horses’ – but those who pursue you will be faster.


This is what the Lord says: Cursed is the person who trusts in mankind. He makes human flesh his strength, and his heart turns from the  Lord.


‘Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, “This is what the Lord God says: Your  heart is proud, and you have said, ‘I am a god;  I sit in the seat of gods in the heart of the sea.’ Yet you are a man and not a god, though you have regarded your heart as that of a god.


The archer will not stand his ground, the one who is swift of foot will not save himself, and the one riding a horse will not save his life.


He has only human strength,  but we have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.’  So the people relied on the words of King Hezekiah of Judah.


so the king of Assyria will lead the captives of Egypt  and the exiles of Cush, young and old alike, stripped and barefoot, with bared buttocks #– #to Egypt’s shame.
