I will leave a meek and humble people  among you, and they will take refuge in the name of the  Lord.


Each will be like a shelter from the wind, a refuge from the rain, like flowing streams  in a dry land and the shade of a massive rock in an arid land.


Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Didn’t God choose the poor in this world  to be rich in faith  and heirs  of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him?


he will dwell on the heights; his refuge will be the rocky fortresses, his food provided, his water assured.


My hand made all these things, and so they all came into being. This is the  Lord’s declaration. I will look favourably on this kind of person: one who is humble,  submissive   in spirit, and trembles at my word.


For this is what the  Lord  says: ‘Even the captives of a mighty man will be taken, and the prey of a tyrant will be delivered; I will contend with the one who contends with you, and I will save your children.


Then  the angel of the Lord   went out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!


Lord, be gracious to us! We wait for you. Be our strength every morning and our salvation in time of trouble.


The humble will have joy after joy in the  Lord, and the poor people will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.


Your many foes  will be like fine dust, and many of the ruthless, like blowing chaff. Then suddenly, in an instant,


Or let it take hold of my strength; let it make peace with me – make peace with me.


For you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and you have failed to remember the rock of your strength; therefore you will plant beautiful plants and set out cuttings from exotic vines.


What answer will be given to the messengers from that nation? The Lord has founded Zion, and his oppressed people find refuge in her.


but he will judge the poor righteously and execute justice for the oppressed of the land. He will strike the land with a sceptre  from his mouth, and he will kill the wicked with a command  from his lips.


He will be a sanctuary; but for the two houses of Israel, he will be a stone  to stumble over and a rock to trip over, and a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.


Give us counsel and make a decision. Shelter us at noonday with shade that is as dark as night. Hide the refugees; do not betray the one who flees.


a spirit of justice to the one who sits in judgement, and strength to those who repel attacks at the city gate.


For the ruthless one will vanish, the scorner will disappear, and all those who lie in wait with evil intent will be killed –


When you cry out, let your collection of idols rescue you! The wind will carry all of them off, a breath will take them away. But whoever takes refuge in me will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain.


Lord, my strength and my stronghold, my refuge in a time of distress, the nations will come to you from the ends of the earth, and they will say, ‘Our ancestors inherited only lies, worthless idols  of no benefit at all.’


You, all of your troops, and many peoples with you will advance, coming like a thunderstorm; you will be like a cloud covering the land.
