Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them of each one. Yes, woe to them when I depart from them!


Ephraim surrounds me with lies, the house of Israel, with deceit. Judah still wanders with God and is faithful to the holy ones.

This is what the Lord says concerning these people: Truly they love to wander; they never rest their feet. So the Lord does not accept them. Now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.


He said, ‘They are indeed my people, children who will not be disloyal,’ and he became their Saviour.


transgression and deception against the  Lord, turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering lying words from the heart.


Now this is what the Lord  says – the one who created you, Jacob, and the one who formed you, Israel   – ‘Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine.


Do not fear, you worm Jacob, you men  of Israel. I will help you’ – this is the  Lord’s declaration. Your Redeemer  is the Holy One of Israel.


Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and who depend on horses! They trust in the abundance of chariots and in the large number of horsemen. They do not look  to the Holy One of Israel, and they do not seek the  Lord.


They were the ones who said to God, ‘Leave us alone! ’ and ‘What can the Almighty do to us? ’  ,


They are your servants and your people. You redeemed them by your great power and strong hand.


Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed  you; that is why I am giving you this command today.


I will banish you from my presence, just as I banished all of your brothers, all the descendants of Ephraim.”


We tried to heal Babylon, but she could not be healed. Abandon her! Let each of us go to his own land, for her judgement extends to the sky and reaches as far as the clouds.


For the wealthy of the city are full of violence, and its residents speak lies; the tongues in their mouths are deceitful.


Woe to the rebellious children! This is the  Lord’s declaration. They carry out a plan,  but not mine; they make an alliance, but against my will, piling sin on top of sin.


Without asking my advice they set out to go down to Egypt in order to seek shelter under Pharaoh’s protection and take refuge in Egypt’s shadow.


They betrayed the  Lord; indeed, they gave birth to illegitimate children. Now the New Moon  will devour them along with their fields.
