‘You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined  it. Why? ’ This is the declaration of the Lord of Armies. ‘Because my house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.

As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline.   So be zealous and repent.

The grass withers, the flowers fade when the breath  of the  Lord blows on them; indeed, the people are grass.


But I have this against you: You have abandoned the love you had at first.

I am about to put a spirit in him, and he will hear a rumour and return to his own land,  where I will cause him to fall by the sword.” ’


The depths of the sea became visible, the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the  Lord, at the blast of the breath  of his nostrils.


During David’s reign there was a famine for three successive years, so David enquired  of the Lord. The Lord answered, ‘It is due to Saul and to his bloody family, because he killed the Gibeonites.’


Sheol and Abaddon  are never satisfied, and people’s eyes are never satisfied.


All things  are wearisome, more than anyone can say. The eye is not satisfied by seeing or the ear filled with hearing.


I will pour out my indignation on you; I will blow the fire of my fury on you. I will hand you over to brutal men, skilled at destruction.


But in the fifth year you may eat its fruit. In this way its yield will increase for you;  I am the Lord your God.


‘You will sow much seed in the field but harvest little, because locusts will devour it.


One person gives freely, yet gains more; another withholds what is right, only to become poor.


For a ten-acre  vineyard will yield only 22 litres of wine, and 220 litres  of seed will yield only 22 litres of grain.


They have sown wheat but harvested thorns. They have exhausted themselves but have no profit. Be put to shame by your harvests because of the  Lord’s burning anger.
