When the time approached for him to die,  he called his son Joseph and said to him, ‘If I have found favour with you, put your hand under my thigh  and promise me that you will deal with me in kindness and faithfulness.  Do not bury me in Egypt.

When a person dies, will he come back to life? If so, I would wait  all the days of my struggle until my relief comes.


Isn’t each person consigned to forced labour  on earth? Are not his days like those of a hired worker?


We will certainly die  and be like water poured out on the ground, which can’t be recovered. But God would not take away a life; he would devise plans so that the one banished from him does not remain banished.


When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.


Jacob said to Pharaoh, ‘My pilgrimage  has lasted for 130 years. My years have been few and hard,  and they have not reached the years of my ancestors during their pilgrimages.’

Afterwards, they carried Asahel to his father’s tomb in Bethlehem and buried him. Then Joab and his men marched all night and reached Hebron at dawn.


Israel said to Joseph, ‘Look, I am about to die, but God will be with you and will bring you back to the land of your fathers.


So Jacob’s sons did for him what he had commanded them.


The Lord said to Moses, ‘You are about to rest with your ancestors,  and these people will soon prostitute themselves with the foreign gods  of the land they are entering. They will abandon me  and break the covenant  I have made with them.


The men answered her, ‘We will give our lives for yours. If you don’t report our mission, we will show kindness and faithfulness to you when the Lord gives us the land.’


‘I am now going the way of the whole earth,  and you know with all your heart and all your soul that none of the good promises the Lord your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
