When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan was bound to David in close friendship,  and loved him as much as he loved himself.


The king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber above the city gate and wept. As he walked, he cried, ‘My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son! ’


‘Someone is pursuing you and intends to take your life. My lord’s life is tucked safely in the place  where the Lord your God protects the living, but he is flinging away your enemies’ lives like stones from a sling.


For how can I go back to my father without the boy? I could not bear to see the grief that would overwhelm my father.’


when he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die. Then your servants will have brought the grey hairs of your servant our father down to Sheol in sorrow.


Then Joseph said, ‘I swear that I will not do this. The man in whose possession the cup was found will be my slave. The rest of you can go in peace to your father.’


and we answered my lord, “We have an elderly father and a younger brother, the child of his old age.  The boy’s brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.”


But we said to my lord, “The boy cannot leave his father. If he were to leave, his father would die.”
