But Jacob answered, ‘My son will not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left.  If anything happens to him on your journey, you will bring my grey hairs down to Sheol in sorrow.’

All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. ‘No,’ he said. ‘I will go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.’ And his father wept for him.


But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he thought, ‘Something might happen to him.’


His father recognised it. ‘It is my son’s robe,’ he said. ‘A vicious animal has devoured him. Joseph has been torn to pieces! ’


But they replied, ‘We, your servants, were twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now  with our father, and one is no longer living.’


I will be the same until your old age, and I will bear you up when you turn grey. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will bear and rescue you.


I said: In the prime  of my life I must go to the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the rest of my years.


For to the person who is pleasing in his sight, he gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy;  but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and accumulating in order to give to the one who is pleasing in God’s sight.  This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.


I have seen all the things that are done under the sun and have found everything to be futile, a pursuit of the wind.  ,


Act according to your wisdom, and do not let his grey head descend to Sheol in peace.


and we answered my lord, “We have an elderly father and a younger brother, the child of his old age.  The boy’s brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.”


Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth round his waist, and mourned for his son for many days.


Then Reuben said to his father, ‘You can kill my two sons if I don’t bring him back to you. Put him in my care,  and I will return him to you.’


Take your brother also, and go back at once to the man.


But we said to my lord, “The boy cannot leave his father. If he were to leave, his father would die.”


He leaves a shining wake behind him; one would think the deep had grey hair!
