If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, certainly now you would have sent me off empty-handed. But God has seen my affliction and my hard work,  and he issued his verdict last night.’

I could do you great harm, but last night the God of your father said to me, “Watch yourself! Don’t say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”

Then the Lord said, ‘I have observed the misery of my people in Egypt, and have heard them crying out  because of their oppressors. I know about their sufferings,


And he said, “Look up and see: all the males that are mating with the flocks are streaked, spotted, and speckled, for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.


He said to them, ‘I can see from your father’s face that his attitude towards me is not the same as before, but the God of my father has been with me.


Isaac began to tremble uncontrollably. ‘Who was it then,’ he said, ‘who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it all before you came in, and I blessed him. Indeed, he will be blessed! ’


So she named the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are El-roi,’  for she said, ‘In this place, have I actually seen  the one who sees me? ’


The angel of the Lord said to her, ‘You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael,  for the Lord has heard your cry of affliction.


Then the Lord came down  to look over the city and the tower that the humans  were building.


Then Jacob said, ‘God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac,  the Lord who said to me, “Go back to your land and to your family, and I will cause you to prosper,”


We must get up and go to Bethel. I will build an altar there to the God who answered me in my day of distress.  He has been with me everywhere I have gone.’


Israel set out with all that he had and came to Beer-sheba,  and he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.


I offer thanks and praise to you, God of my ancestors, because you have given me wisdom and power. And now you have let me know what we asked of you, for you have let us know the king’s mystery.


When you set him free, do not send him away empty-handed.
