The one who loves a father or mother more than me is not worthy of me;   the one who loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.


The Lord paid attention to Hannah’s need,  and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord.


But he gave a double  portion  to Hannah, for he loved her even though the Lord had kept her from conceiving.


‘If a man has two wives, one loved and the other neglected, and both the loved and the neglected bear him sons, and if the neglected wife has the firstborn son,


for the Lord had completely closed all the wombs in Abimelech’s household on account of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

The one who loves his life will lose it,   and the one who hates   his life   in this world will keep it for eternal life.

But they had no children because Elizabeth could not conceive, and both of them were well on in years.


Then God remembered Rachel. He listened to her and opened her womb.


Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. And Esau determined in his heart, ‘The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.’


Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife because she was childless.  The Lord was receptive to his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.


but I hated Esau.  I turned his mountains into a wasteland, and gave his inheritance to the desert jackals.’


‘No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.


I prayed for this boy,  and since the Lord gave me what I asked him for,


After some time,  Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel,  because she said, ‘I requested him from the Lord.’


Abram’s wife, Sarai, had not borne any children for him, but she owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar.


And so he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. After this, he fathered Isaac and circumcised  him on the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.


Leah conceived, gave birth to a son, and named him Reuben,  for she said, ‘The Lord has seen my affliction;  surely my husband will love me now.’


Leah’s sons were Reuben (Jacob’s firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.


Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. He slept with her, and the Lord granted conception to her, and she gave birth to a son.


Sarai was unable to conceive;  she did not have a child.
