Powerful kings have also ruled over Jerusalem and exercised authority over the whole region west of the River Euphrates, and tribute, duty, and land tax were paid to them.

Solomon ruled all the kingdoms from the River Euphrates to the land of the Philistines and as far as the border of Egypt.  They offered tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.


On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, ‘I give this land to your offspring,  from the Brook of Egypt  to the great river, the River Euphrates:


David also defeated King Hadadezer of Zobah at Hamath when he went to establish his control at the River Euphrates.

Let it now be known to the king that if that city is rebuilt and its walls are finished,  they will not pay tribute, duty, or land tax,  and the royal revenue  will suffer.

When Hadadezer’s subjects saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became his subjects. After this, the Arameans were never willing to help the Ammonites again.

As Jesus went on from there,  he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, ‘Follow me,’ and he got up and followed him.


I issued a decree and a search was conducted. It was discovered that this city has had uprisings against kings since ancient times, and there have been rebellions and revolts in it.


Therefore, issue an order for these men to stop, so that this city will not be rebuilt until a further decree has been pronounced by me.


How  she sits alone, the city  once crowded with people! She who was great among the nations has become like a widow. The princess among the provinces has been put to forced labour.


King Hiram of Tyre  sent his emissaries to Solomon when he heard that he had been anointed king in his father’s place,  for Hiram had always been friends with David.


The Lord my God has now given me rest on every side; there is no enemy or misfortune.


It had strong branches, fit for the sceptres of rulers; its height towered among the clouds. So it was conspicuous for its height as well as its many branches.
