He named the place Massah  and Meribah  , because the Israelites complained, and because they tested the Lord, saying, ‘Is the Lord among us or not? ’

These are the Waters of Meribah,  , where the Israelites quarrelled with the Lord, and he demonstrated his holiness to them.


‘You continued to provoke the Lord at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth-hattaavah.


So the people complained to Moses, ‘Give us water to drink.’ ‘Why are you complaining to me? ’ Moses replied to them. ‘Why are you testing  the Lord? ’


‘Aaron will be gathered to his people; he will not enter the land I have given the Israelites, because you both rebelled against my command at the Waters of Meribah.


The Word  became flesh  and dwelt  among us. We observed his glory,  the glory as the one and only  Son  from the Father, full of grace and truth.


Her leaders issue rulings for a bribe, her priests teach for payment, and her prophets practise divination for silver. Yet they lean on the  Lord, saying, ‘Isn’t the Lord   among us? No disaster will overtake us.’


Cry out and sing, citizen of Zion, for the Holy One of Israel  is among you in his greatness.’


Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said to the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, ‘Today we know that the Lord is among us, because you have not committed this treachery against him.  As a result, you have rescued the Israelites from the Lord’s power.’


My anger will burn against them on that day;  I will abandon them and hide my face from them so that they will become easy prey.  Many troubles and afflictions will come to them. On that day they will say, “Haven’t these troubles come to us because our God is no longer with us? ”


Then he said, ‘My Lord, if I have indeed found favour with you, my Lord, please go with us (even though this is a stiff-necked people), forgive our iniquity and our sin, and accept us as your own possession.’


none of the men who have seen my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tested me these ten times and did not obey me,


When the community quarrelled in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you rebelled against my command to demonstrate my holiness in their sight at the waters.’ Those were the Waters of Meribah-kadesh  in the Wilderness of Zin.


Do not test  the Lord your God as you tested him at Massah.


He said about Levi: Your Thummim and Urim  belong to your faithful one; you tested him at Massah and contended with him at the Waters of Meribah.
