Now at midnight the Lord struck every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner who was in the dungeon, and every firstborn of the livestock.

I told you: Let my son go so that he may worship me, but you refused to let him go. Look, I am about to kill your firstborn son! ’


For every firstborn among the Israelites is mine, both man and animal. I consecrated them to myself  on the day I struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt.


‘I will pass through  the land of Egypt on that night and strike every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, both people and animals. I am the Lord; I will execute judgements against all the gods of Egypt.


By faith he instituted the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn might not touch the Israelites.


Meanwhile, the Egyptians were burying every firstborn male the Lord had struck down among them, for the Lord had executed judgement against their gods.

They pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern, but he remained in the guard’s courtyard.


So they took Jeremiah and dropped him into the cistern of Malchiah the king’s son, which was in the guard’s courtyard, lowering Jeremiah with ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.


The prisoner  is soon to be set free; he will not die and go to the Pit, and his food will not be lacking.


They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit. They will be confined to a dungeon; after many days they will be punished.


They die suddenly in the middle of the night; people shudder, then pass away. Even the mighty are removed without effort.


because every firstborn belongs to me. At the time I struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt,  I consecrated every firstborn in Israel to myself, both man and animal. They are mine; I am the Lord.’


The Lord did this the next day. All the Egyptian livestock died,  but none among the Israelite livestock died.


Then the Israelites went and did this; they did just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron.


Plague goes before him, and pestilence follows in his steps.


However, I will judge the nation they serve,  and afterwards they will go out with many possessions.


The Lord said  to Moses, ‘I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here. When he lets you go,  he will drive you out of here.


Be sure that all who are enraged against you will be ashamed and disgraced; those who contend with you will become as nothing and will perish.
