He said to his people, ‘Look, the Israelite people are more numerous and powerful than we are.
I saw that all labour and all skilful work is due to one person’s jealousy of another. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind. ,
For we too were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved by various passions and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, detesting one another.
Fury is cruel, and anger a flood, but who can withstand jealousy?
A large population is a king’s splendour, but a shortage of people is a ruler’s devastation.
Or do you think it’s without reason that the Scripture says: The spirit he made to dwell in us envies intensely? ,
For anger kills a fool, and jealousy slays the gullible.
And Abimelech said to Isaac, ‘Leave us, for you are much too powerful for us.’
God said, ‘I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.
Pharaoh also said, ‘Look, the people of the land are so numerous, and you would stop them from their labour.’
