‘When a man takes a bride, he must not go out with the army or be liable for any duty. He is free to stay at home for one year, so that he can bring joy to the wife he has married.

Let your fountain be blessed, and take pleasure in the wife of your youth.


Has any man become engaged to a woman and not married her? Let him leave and return home. Otherwise he may die in battle and another man marry her.”


This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh.


Enjoy life with the wife you love all the days of your fleeting  life,  which has been given to you under the sun, all your fleeting days. For that is your portion in life and in your struggle  under the sun.


This is what I mean, brothers and sisters: The time is limited,  so from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none,


‘And another said, “I just got married,   and therefore I’m unable to come.”


‘Do not take a pair of grindstones or even the upper millstone as security for a debt, because that is like taking a life as security.
