You are not to make a covenant  with the inhabitants of this land. You are to tear down their altars.  But you have not obeyed me. What have you done?


you must drive out all the inhabitants of the land before you, destroy all their stone images  and cast images,  and demolish all their high places.


On that day’ #– #this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies #– #‘I will remove the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered.  I will banish the prophets  and the unclean spirit from the land.


Instead, this is what you are to do to them: tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, cut down their Asherah poles,  and burn their carved images.


‘Pay strict attention to everything I have said to you. You must not invoke the names of other gods; they must not be heard on your lips.  ,


And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea.  It had ten horns and seven heads. On its horns were ten crowns,  , and on its heads were blasphemous names.  ,


I will pull up the Asherah poles  from among you and demolish your cities.


For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth; they will no longer be remembered by their names.

In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still a youth, Josiah began to seek the God of his ancestor David,  and in the twelfth year he began to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved images,  and the cast images.


When all this was completed, all Israel who had attended went out to the cities of Judah and broke up the sacred pillars, chopped down the Asherah poles, and tore down the high places and altars  throughout Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and Manasseh, to the last one.  Then all the Israelites returned to their cities, each to his own possession.


However, some good is found in you, for you have eradicated the Asherah poles from the land and have determined in your heart to seek God.’


He broke the sacred pillars into pieces,  cut down the Asherah poles,  then filled their places with human bones.


He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles.  He broke into pieces the bronze snake that Moses made,  for until then the Israelites were burning incense to it. It was called Nehushtan.


He also  removed his grandmother  Maacah from being queen mother because she had made an obscene image of Asherah. Asa chopped down her obscene image and burned it  in the Kidron Valley.


He removed the pagan altars and the high places. He shattered their sacred pillars and chopped down their Asherah poles.


Do not bow in worship to their gods, and do not serve them. Do not imitate their practices. Instead, demolish them  and smash their sacred pillars to pieces.


Instead, you must tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, and chop down their Asherah poles.


Burn the carved images of their gods. Don’t covet the silver and gold on the images and take it for yourself, or else you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the Lord your God.


Don’t worship the Lord your God this way.


For the Lord will strike Israel so that they will  shake as a reed shakes in water. He will uproot Israel from this good soil that he gave to their ancestors.  He will scatter them beyond the Euphrates  because they made their Asherah poles, angering the Lord.


So all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed its altars and images to pieces,  and they killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, at the altars. Then Jehoiada the priest appointed guards for the Lord’s temple.


Therefore Jacob’s iniquity  will be atoned for in this way, and the result of the removal of his sin will be this: when he makes all the altar stones like crushed bits of chalk, no Asherah poles or incense altars will remain standing.


Asa did what was good and right  in the sight of the Lord his God.
