Then the commander went with the servants and brought them in without force, because they were afraid the people might stone them.

No one else dared to join them, but the people spoke well of them.


After threatening them further, they released them. They found no way to punish them because the people were all giving glory to God over what had been done.


As  the captain of the temple police and the chief priests heard these things, they were baffled about them, wondering what would come of this.


The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death,  because they were afraid of the people.


Then the scribes and the chief priests  looked for a way to get their hands on him  that very hour, because they knew he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.


But if we say, “Of human origin,” all the people  will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.’


‘Not during the festival,’ they said, ‘so there won’t be rioting among the people.’


But if we say, “Of human origin,” we’re afraid of the crowd,  because everyone considers John to be a prophet.’


Although Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd since they regarded John as a prophet.


Peter was following him at a distance right to the high priest’s courtyard. He went in and was sitting with the servants to see the outcome.


He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police  how he could hand him over  to them.


But when the servants  got there, they did not find them in the jail; so they returned and reported,


Someone came and reported to them, ‘Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple and teaching the people.’
