When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they shouted, saying in the Lycaonian language, ‘The gods have come down to us in human form! ’
They expected that he would begin to swell up or suddenly drop dead. After they waited a long time and saw nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.
They all paid attention to him, from the least of them to the greatest, and they said, ‘This man is called the Great Power of God.’ ,
The assembled people began to shout, ‘It’s the voice of a god and not of a man! ’
For you are not being sent to a people of unintelligible speech or a difficult language but to the house of Israel –
they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian towns of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding countryside.
Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.
