When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put him to death.


For they can’t sleep unless they have done what is evil; they are robbed of sleep unless they make someone stumble.


The murderer rises at dawn to kill the poor and needy, and by night he becomes a thief.


So the king got up and sat in the city gate,  and all the people were told, ‘Look, the king is sitting in the city gate.’ Then they all came into the king’s presence. Meanwhile, each Israelite had fled to his tent.


Boaz went to the gate of the town  and sat down there. Soon the family redeemer Boaz had spoken about came by. Boaz said, ‘Come over here  and sit down.’ So he went over and sat down.


They judged the people at all times; they would bring the hard cases to Moses, but they would judge every minor case themselves.


Whenever they have a dispute, it comes to me, and I make a decision between one man and another. I teach them God’s statutes and laws.’


When Moses’s father-in-law saw everything he was doing for them he asked, ‘What is this you’re doing for the people? Why are you alone sitting as judge, while all the people stand around you from morning until evening? ’


So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city  and spoke to the men of their city.


‘If a case is too difficult for you #– #concerning bloodshed,  lawsuits,  or assaults   #– #cases disputed at your city gates,  then go up to the place the Lord your God chooses.


They replied, ‘If you will be kind to this people and please them by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants for ever.’


‘In his place a despised  person will arise; royal honours will not be given to him, but he will come during a time of peace  , and seize the kingdom by intrigue.
