Then Absalom sent agents throughout the tribes of Israel with this message: ‘When you hear the sound of the ram’s horn,  you are to say, “Absalom has become king in Hebron! ” ’

All these warriors, lined up in battle formation, came to Hebron wholeheartedly determined to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of Israel was also of one mind to make David king.


The numbers of the armed troops who came to David at Hebron to turn Saul’s kingdom over to him,  according to the Lord’s word,  were as follows:


So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron. David made a covenant with them at Hebron in the Lord’s presence, and they anointed David king over Israel, in keeping with the Lord’s word through Samuel.


Each man quickly took his garment and put it under Jehu on the bare steps.  , They blew the ram’s horn  and proclaimed, ‘Jehu is king! ’


There, the priest Zadok and the prophet Nathan are to anoint him as king over Israel.  You are to blow the ram’s horn  and say, “Long live King Solomon! ”


But Absalom, the man we anointed over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about restoring the king? ’


Then Absalom said to his servants, ‘See, Joab has a field right next to mine, and he has barley there. Go and set fire to it! ’ So Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.


Now Absalom commanded his young men, ‘Watch Amnon until he is in a good mood from the wine. When I order you to strike Amnon, then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Am I not the one who has commanded you? Be strong and valiant! ’


In Hebron he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned for thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.


The length of time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.


Some time later, David enquired of the Lord:  ‘Should I go to one of the towns of Judah? ’ The Lord answered him, ‘Go.’ Then David asked, ‘Where should I go? ’ ‘To Hebron,’  the Lord replied.


‘Go in peace,’ the king said to him.  So he went to Hebron.


Then Nathan  said to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother,  ‘Have you not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith has become king  and our lord David does not know it?
