and warned him, ‘Don’t you realise that Baalis, king of the Ammonites, has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to kill you? ’ But Gedaliah son of Ahikam would not believe them.
Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore an oath to them and their men, assuring them, ‘Don’t be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well for you.
‘Go and enquire of the Lord for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah, concerning the words of the book that was found. For great is the Lord’s wrath that is poured out on us because our ancestors have not kept the word of the Lord in order to do everything written in this book.’
