One of Saul’s servants, detained before the Lord, was there that day. His name was Doeg the Edomite,  chief of Saul’s shepherds.

Then Doeg the Edomite,  who was in charge of Saul’s servants, answered, ‘I saw Jesse’s son come to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob.


Shitrai the Sharonite was in charge of the herds that grazed in Sharon,  while Shaphat son of Adlai was in charge of the herds in the valleys.


This people   honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.


asking, ‘When will the New Moon be over so that we may sell grain, and the Sabbath, so that we may market wheat? We can reduce the measure while increasing the price and cheat with dishonest scales.

Just then Saul was coming in from the field behind his oxen. ‘What’s the matter with the people? Why are they weeping? ’ Saul enquired, and they repeated to him the words of the men from Jabesh.


But the herdsmen of Gerar quarrelled with Isaac’s herdsmen and said, ‘The water is ours! ’ So he named the well Esek  because they argued with him.


David said to Ahimelech, ‘Do you have a spear or sword on hand? I didn’t even bring my sword or my weapons since the king’s mission was urgent.’


Then David said to Abiathar, ‘I knew that Doeg the Edomite  was there that day and that he was sure to report to Saul. I myself am responsible for  the lives of everyone in your father’s family.


Jaziz the Hagrite  was in charge of the flocks. All these were officials in charge of King David’s property.


‘No one outside a priest’s family  , is to eat the holy offering. A foreigner staying with a priest or a hired worker is not to eat the holy offering.


But if the priest’s daughter becomes widowed or divorced, has no children, and returns to her father’s house as in her youth, she may share her father’s food. But no outsider may share it.


‘Take fine flour and bake it into twelve loaves;  each loaf is to be made with four litres.


The bread is to be set out before the Lord every Sabbath day as a permanent covenant  obligation on the part of the Israelites.


Ahimelech enquired of the Lord for him  and gave him provisions.  He also gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.’
