Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul,  and an evil spirit sent from the Lord began to torment him,

Saul was afraid of David,  because the Lord was with David  but had left Saul.


‘Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up? ’ Samuel asked Saul. ‘I’m in serious trouble,’ replied Saul. ‘The Philistines are fighting against me and God has turned away from me.  He doesn’t answer me any more,  either through the prophets or in dreams. So I’ve called on you to tell me what I should do.’


Then she cried, ‘Samson, the Philistines are here! ’ When he awoke from his sleep, he said, ‘I will escape as I did before and shake myself free.’ But he did not know that the Lord had left him.


God sent an evil spirit  between Abimelech and the citizens of Shechem. They treated Abimelech deceitfully,


The next day an evil spirit sent from God came powerfully on Saul,  and he began to rave  inside the palace. David was playing the lyre as usual,  but Saul was holding a spear,


Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them of each one. Yes, woe to them when I depart from them!


‘The Lord asked him, “How? ” ‘He said, “I will go and become a lying spirit  in the mouth of all his prophets.” ‘Then he said, “You will certainly entice him and prevail.  Go and do that.”


When Saul heard these words, the Spirit of God suddenly came powerfully on him,  and his anger burned furiously.


Samson took hold of the two middle pillars supporting the temple and leaned against them, one on his right hand and the other on his left.


so Saul’s servants said to him, ‘You see that an evil spirit from God is tormenting you.


Let our lord command your servants here in your presence to look for someone who knows how to play the lyre. Whenever the evil spirit from God comes on you, that person can play the lyre, and you will feel better.’


Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul,  David would pick up his lyre and play, and Saul would then be relieved, feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.


But my faithful love will never leave him  as it did when I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.


Then Micaiah said, ‘Therefore, hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne,  and the whole heavenly army  was standing by him at his right hand and at his left hand.
