The men of Israel saw that they were in trouble because the troops were in a difficult situation. They hid in caves, in thickets, among rocks, and in holes and cisterns.

and they oppressed Israel.  Because of Midian, the Israelites made hiding places  for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.


The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and on mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.


I am torn between the two. I long to depart and be with Christ   #– #which is far better   #– #


But this is a people plundered and looted, all of them trapped in holes or imprisoned in dungeons. They have become plunder with no one to rescue them and loot, with no one saying, ‘Give it back! ’


David answered Gad, ‘I have great anxiety. Please, let us fall into the Lord’s hands because his mercies are great,  but don’t let me fall into human hands.’


When Saul came to the sheepfolds along the road, a cave was there, and he went in to relieve himself.  , David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave,

Then the men of Israel returned, and the men of Benjamin were terrified when they realised that disaster had struck them.


The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim. Israel was greatly oppressed,


The men of Ai turned and looked back, and smoke from the city was rising to the sky! They could not escape in any direction, and the troops who had fled to the wilderness now became the pursuers.


When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, their rulers marched up towards Israel. When the Israelites heard about it, they were afraid because of the Philistines.


Then Samuel went  from Gilgal to Gibeah in Benjamin. Saul registered the troops who were with him, about six hundred men.


When all the Israelite men who had been hiding in the hill country of Ephraim  heard that the Philistines were fleeing, they also joined Saul and Jonathan in the battle.


Now the cistern where Ishmael had thrown all the corpses of the men he had struck down was a large one  that King Asa had made in the encounter with King Baasha of Israel.  Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.


‘Tell them this: “This is what the Lord God says: As surely as I live, those who are in the ruins will fall by the sword, those in the open field I have given to wild animals to be devoured, and those in the strongholds and caves will die by plague.


When the men of Israel on the other side of the valley and on the other side of the Jordan saw that Israel’s men had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled. So the Philistines came and settled in them.
