Samuel said to all the people, ‘Do you see the one the Lord has chosen?  There is no one like him among the entire population.’ And all the people shouted,  ‘Long live the king! ’


They said to him, ‘Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Therefore, appoint a king to judge us the same as all the other nations have.’


Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.


So all the people went to Gilgal, and there in the Lord’s presence  they made Saul king. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings  in the Lord’s presence, and Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.


As for the donkeys that wandered away from you three days ago,  don’t worry about them because they’ve been found. And who does all Israel desire  but you and all your father’s family? ’


Isn’t the wheat harvest today?  I will call on the Lord, and he will send thunder and rain so that you will recognise what an immense evil you committed in the Lord’s sight by requesting a king for yourselves.’


They pleaded with Samuel, ‘Pray to the Lord your God for your servants  so we won’t die! For we have added to all our sins the evil of requesting a king for ourselves.’
