You can't believe idols and fortune-tellers, or depend on the hope you receive from witchcraft and interpreters of dreams. But you have tried all of these, and now you are like sheep without a shepherd.

Before Rachel left, she stole the household idols while Laban was out shearing his sheep.

Idols can't send rain, and showers don't fall by themselves. Only you control the rain, so we put our trust in you, the LORD our God.

These prophets go to people who refuse to respect me and who are stubborn and do whatever they want. The prophets tell them, “The LORD has promised everything will be fine.”

If you listen to such lies, I will have you dragged far from your country and killed.

Your prophets have told you that you don't need to obey Nebuchadnezzar, but don't listen to their lies.

You might have people in your kingdom who claim they can tell the future by magic or by talking with the dead or by dreams or messages from a god. But don't pay attention if any of them tell you not to obey Nebuchadnezzar.

Hananiah, I have never sent you to speak for me. And yet you have talked my people into believing your lies and rebelling against me. So now I will send you—I'll send you right off the face of the earth! You will die before this year is over.

Some of your people there in Babylonia are fortune-tellers, and you have asked them to tell you what will happen in the future. But they will only lead you astray. And don't let the prophets fool you, either. They speak in my name, but they are liars. I have not spoken to them.

Have you locked up the prophets who lied to you and said that the king of Babylonia would never attack Jerusalem?

Israel is a flock of sheep scattered by hungry lions. The king of Assyria first gobbled Israel up. Then Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylonia, crunched on Israel's bones.

Your prophets deceived you with false visions and lying messages— they should have warned you to leave your sins and be saved from disaster.

You wicked Ammonites see false visions and believe untrue messages. But your day of punishment is coming soon, and my sword will slaughter you!

They strayed in every direction, and because there was no shepherd to watch them, they were attacked and eaten by wild animals.

It will also be a long time before Israel has a king or before sacrifices are offered at the temple or before there is any way to get guidance from God.

I, the LORD, promise to bring together the people of Israel who have survived. I will gather them, just as a shepherd brings sheep together, and there will be many.

What is an idol worth? It's merely a false god. Why trust a speechless image made from wood or metal by human hands?

You worthless shepherd, deserting the sheep! I hope a sword will cripple your arm and blind your right eye.

Your people need someone to lead them into battle, or else they will be like sheep wandering around without a shepherd.”

When he saw the crowds, he felt sorry for them. They were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw the large crowd that was like sheep without a shepherd. He felt sorry for the people and started teaching them many things.

the five men who had been spies asked the other warriors, “Did you know that someone in this village has several idols and a sacred priestly apron? What do you think we should do about it?”
