Then the LORD said, “I won't let my life-giving breath remain in anyone for ever. No one will live for more than one hundred and twenty years.”

All of that happened because the people of Israel had not obeyed the LORD their God. They rejected the solemn agreement he had made with them, and they ignored everything that the LORD's servant Moses had told them.

Our stubborn ancestors refused to obey— they forgot about the miracles you had worked for them, and they were determined to return to Egypt and become slaves again. But, our God, you are merciful and quick to forgive; you are loving, kind, and very patient. So you never turned away from them—

He made your children pay for their sins.

What the LORD had earlier said to Moses came true. He had said, “The king of Egypt won't listen. Then I will perform even more miracles.”

This is the LORD's message for his rebellious people: “You follow your own plans instead of mine; you make treaties without asking me, and you keep on sinning.

They have turned against the LORD and can't be trusted. They have refused his teaching

Israel sinned and refused to obey the LORD or follow his instructions. So the LORD let them be robbed of everything they owned.

because now that I have given you the LORD's answer, you refuse to obey him.

But your ancestors refused to listen. They were stubborn, and whenever I wanted them to go one-way, they always went the other.

but they still rebelled against me. They refused to listen and kept on worshipping their idols and foreign gods. In my anger, I decided to punish the Israelites in Egypt.

Israel, you disobeyed my God. Now he will force you to roam from nation to nation.

If you disobey me and my laws, and if you break our agreement,

In times past, God let each nation go its own way.

God turned his back on his people and left them. Then they worshipped the stars in the sky, just as it says in the Book of the Prophets, “People of Israel, you didn't offer sacrifices and offerings to me during those forty years in the desert.

So God let these people go their own way. They did what they wanted to do, and their filthy thoughts made them do shameful things with their bodies.

The people would not listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want to be like other nations. We want a king to rule us and lead us in battle.”
