Our God, you are powerful, fearsome, and faithful, always true to your word. So please keep in mind the terrible sufferings of our people, kings, leaders, priests, and prophets, from the time Assyria ruled until this very day.

You made me suffer a lot, but you will bring me back from this deep pit and give me new life.

You hold in your hand a cup filled with wine, strong and foaming. You will pour out some for every sinful person on this earth, and they will have to drink until it is gone.

LORD God All-Powerful, how much longer will the prayers of your people make you angry?

We were like a grapevine you brought out of Egypt. You chased other nations away and planted us here.

Will you always be angry with us and our families?

You broke off your agreement with your servant, the king, and you completely destroyed his kingdom.

Jerusalem, wake up! Stand up! You've drunk too much from the cup filled with the LORD's anger. You have swallowed every drop, and you can't walk straight.

to the LORD your God, who defends you and says, “I have taken from your hands the cup filled with my anger that made you drunk. You will never be forced to drink it again.

The LORD God of Israel showed me a vision in which he said, “Jeremiah, here is a cup filled with the wine of my anger. Take it and make every nation drink some.

You people of Edom can celebrate now! But your time will come to suffer and stagger around naked.

You warned us and our leaders that Jerusalem would suffer the worst disaster in human history, and you did exactly as you had threatened.

Now you will be disgraced instead of praised. The LORD will make you drunk, and when others see you naked, you will lose their respect.

The great city of Babylon split into three parts, and the cities of other nations fell. So God made Babylon drink from the wine cup that was filled with his anger.

Then they shouted, “Pity the great city of Babylon! She dressed in fine linen and wore purple and scarlet cloth. She had jewellery made of gold and precious stones and pearls.
