I will praise you, LORD! You saved me from the grave and kept my enemies from celebrating my death.

David had left ten of his wives in Jerusalem to take care of his palace. But when he came back, he had them taken to another house, and he placed soldiers there to guard them. He gave them whatever they needed, but he never slept with any of them again. They had to live there for the rest of their lives as if they were widows.

Then he built an altar for the LORD. He sacrificed animals and burnt them on the altar. The LORD answered the prayers of the people, and no one else died from the terrible disease.

King Hiram of Tyre sent some officials to David. Carpenters and stone workers came with them, and they brought cedar logs so they could build David a palace.

David went home so he could ask the LORD to bless his family. But Saul's daughter Michal went out and started yelling at him. “You were really great today!” she said. “You acted like a dirty old man, dancing around half-naked in front of your servants' slave-girls.”

Then one day, as David was talking with Nathan the prophet, David said, “Look around! I live in a palace made of cedar, but the sacred chest has to stay in a tent.”

Joab refused to include anyone from the tribes of Levi and Benjamin, because he still disagreed with David's orders.

My enemies will say, “Now we've won!” They will be greatly pleased when I am defeated.

Don't let the wicked succeed in doing what they want, or else they might never stop planning evil.

I will praise you, my God and King, and always honour your name.

and I trust you. Don't make me ashamed or let enemies defeat me.

You will let me defeat all of my enemies. Then I will celebrate, as I enter your tent with animal sacrifices and songs of praise.

Come, save us and bless us. Be our shepherd and always carry us in your arms.

Don't let my brutal enemies be glad because of me. They hate me for no reason. Don't let them wink behind my back.

Then my enemies won't defeat me, and I will know that you really care.

I prayed to the Lord, and I praised him.

Why should nations ask us, “Where is your God?” Let us and the other nations see you take revenge for your servants who died a violent death.

Every nation around us sneers and makes fun.

Those who pass by shake their heads and sneer as they make fun and shout, “What a lovely city you were, the happiest on earth, but look at you now!”

That's why I say: “Praise and honour the King who rules from heaven! Everything he does is honest and fair, and he can shatter the power of those who are proud.”

Then the tribal officials will say to the troops: If any of you have built a new house, but haven't yet moved in, you may go home. It isn't right for you to die in battle and for somebody else to live in your new house.
