After that, they crossed the gorge of the River Arnon and camped in the Moabite desert bordering Amorite territory. The Arnon was the border between the Moabites and the Amorites.

The women of Moab crossing the River Arnon are like a flock of birds scattered from their nests.

They will answer, “Moab has been defeated! Weep with us in shame. Tell everyone at the River Arnon that Moab is destroyed.”

A song in The Book of the LORD's Battles mentions the town of Waheb with its creeks in the territory of Suphah. It also mentions the River Arnon,

When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went to meet him at the town of Ir, which is on the northern border of Moab.

When we came to the Zered Gorge along the southern border of Moab, the LORD told us to cross the gorge into Moab, and we did.

A little later, the Israelites set out into the desert, going east of Edom and Moab, and camping on the eastern side of the gorge of the River Arnon. The Arnon is the eastern border of Moab, and since the Israelites didn't cross it, they didn't even set foot in Moab.
