Then the LORD said: Abram, you will live to an old age and die in peace. But I solemnly promise that your descendants will live as foreigners in a land that doesn't belong to them. They will be forced into slavery and abused for four hundred years. But I will terribly punish the nation that enslaves them, and they will leave with many possessions.

After the child had been sick for seven days, he died, but the officials were afraid to tell David. They said to each other, “Even when the boy was alive, David wouldn't listen to us. How can we tell him his son is dead? He might do something terrible!”

He told them, “If a Hebrew woman gives birth to a girl, let the child live. If the baby is a boy, kill him!”

until finally, the king gave a command to everyone in the nation, “As soon as a Hebrew boy is born, throw him into the River Nile! But you can let the girls live.”

The LORD's people left Egypt exactly four hundred and thirty years after they had arrived.

The bosses beat the men in charge of the slaves and said, “Why didn't you force the slaves to make as many bricks yesterday and today as they did before?”

In Egypt we could eat all the fish we wanted, and there were cucumbers, melons, onions, and garlic.

It's bad enough that you took us from our rich farmland in Egypt to let us die here in the desert. Now you also want to boss us around!

Moses sent messengers from Israel's camp near Kadesh with this message for the king of Edom: We are Israelites, your own relatives, and we're sure you have heard the terrible things that have happened to us.

and when we begged our LORD for help, he answered our prayer and brought us out of that land. Now we are camped at the border of your territory, near the town of Kadesh.

His father went to Egypt and died there, just as our ancestors did.

He tricked our ancestors and was cruel to them. He even made them leave their babies outside, so they would die.

The Egyptians were cruel and had no pity on us. They ill-treated our people and forced us into slavery.
