When the disciples James and John saw what was happening, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to destroy these people?”

The Gibeonites were not Israelites; they were descendants of the Amorites. The people of Israel had promised not to kill them, but Saul had tried to kill them because he wanted Israel and Judah to control all the land. David called the Gibeonites to him, and he talked with them.

So at once he sent an army officer and fifty soldiers to meet Elijah. Elijah was sitting on top of a hill at the time. The officer went up to him and said, “Man of God, the king orders you to come down and talk with him.”

But Jesus turned and corrected them for what they had said.

It performed mighty miracles, and while people watched, it even made fire come down from the sky.

One of its heads seemed to have been fatally wounded, but now it was well. Everyone on earth marvelled at this beast,
