So John went along the Jordan Valley, telling the people, “Turn back to God and be baptized! Then your sins will be forgiven.”

I baptize you with water so that you will give up your sins. But someone more powerful is going to come, and I am not good enough even to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

John will lead many people in Israel to turn back to the Lord their God.

You will tell his people that they can be saved when their sins are forgiven.

When Jesus returned from the River Jordan, the power of the Holy Spirit was with him, and the Spirit led him into the desert.

John said this as he was baptizing east of the River Jordan in Bethany.

They went to John and said, “Rabbi, you spoke about a man when you were with him east of the Jordan. He is now baptizing people, and everyone is going to him.”

But before Jesus came, John was telling everyone in Israel to turn back to God and be baptized.

Paul replied, “John baptized people so that they would turn to God. But he also told them that someone else was coming, and that they should put their faith in him. Jesus is the one that John was talking about.”

What are you waiting for? Get up! Be baptized, and wash away your sins by praying to the Lord.”
