But the people only laughed and insulted these prophets. They ignored what the LORD God was trying to tell them, until he finally became so angry that nothing could stop him from punishing Judah and Jerusalem.

I am not here as your judge; your own words are witnesses against you.

They will be destroyed by their own words, and everyone who sees them will tremble with fear.

You may wonder why a son isn't punished for the sins of his father. It is because the son does what is right and obeys my laws.

You Pharisees and teachers are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You're like tombs that have been whitewashed. On the outside they are beautiful, but inside they are full of bones and filth.

But you prove that you really are the relatives of the ones who killed the prophets.

Yes, you are really in for trouble. You build monuments to honour the prophets your own people murdered long ago.

Because of your evil deeds, the Wisdom of God said, “I will send prophets and apostles to you. But you will murder some and ill-treat others.”

They know God has said that anyone who acts this way deserves to die. But they keep on doing evil things, and they even encourage others to do them.

My friends, follow the example of the prophets who spoke for the Lord. They were patient, even when they had to suffer.

Joshua said, “You have heard yourselves say that you will worship and obey the LORD. Isn't that true?” “Yes, it's true,” they answered.
