You broke off your agreement with your servant, the king, and you completely destroyed his kingdom.

Doing right brings honour to a nation, but sin brings disgrace.

because wealth and honour don't last for ever.

Jerusalem and Judah, you rebelled against your glorious LORD— your words and your actions, made you stumble and fall.

The LORD told me to tell you that your king and his mother must surrender their thrones and remove their crowns.

It's all your own fault! You stopped following me, the LORD your God,

Your own sins will punish you, because it was a bitter mistake for you to reject me without fear of punishment. I, the LORD All-Powerful, have spoken.

But when our ancestors took over the land, they did not obey you. And now you have punished Israel with disaster.

“People of Judah, your hearts will be in pain, but it's your own fault that you will be punished.”

Jerusalem, once so crowded, lies deserted and lonely. This city that was known all over the world is now like a widow. This queen of the nations has been made a slave.

The LORD was right, but I refused to obey him. Now I ask all of you to look at my sufferings— even my young people have been dragged away.

Won't you look and see how upset I am, our LORD? My stomach is in knots, and my heart is broken because I betrayed you. In the streets and at home, my people are slaughtered.

Jerusalem's horrible sins have made the city a joke. Those who once admired her now hate her instead— she has been disgraced; she groans and turns away.

The Lord was angry! So he disgraced Zion though it was Israel's pride and his own place of rest. In his anger he threw Zion down from heaven to earth.

Jerusalem was punished because her prophets and her priests had sinned and caused the death of innocent victims.

I, the LORD God, command you to take off your royal turban and your crown, because everything will be different. Those who had no power will be put in charge, and those who now rule will become nobodies.

Because of your sins, I will wound you and leave you ruined and defenceless.

Don't worry about what you will suffer. The devil will throw some of you into jail, and you will be tested and made to suffer for ten days. But if you are faithful until you die, I will reward you with a glorious life.

I am coming soon. So hold firmly to what you have, and no one will take away the crown that you will be given as your reward.

The Israelites met together at Mizpah with Samuel as their leader. They drew water from the well and poured it out as an offering to the LORD. On that same day they went without eating to show their sorrow, and they confessed they had been unfaithful to the LORD.
