Jerusalem's horrible sins have made the city a joke. Those who once admired her now hate her instead— she has been disgraced; she groans and turns away.

Straight away they saw what they had done, and they realized they were naked. Then they sewed fig leaves together to make something to cover themselves.

But if you or any of your descendants disobey my commands or start worshipping foreign gods,

I will no longer let my people Israel live in this land I gave them. I will desert this temple where I said I would be worshipped. Then people everywhere will think this nation is only a joke and will make fun of it.

Then they will answer, “We know why the LORD did this. The people of Israel rejected the LORD their God, who rescued their ancestors from Egypt, and they started worshipping other gods.”

You will suffer the shame of going naked, because I will take revenge, and no one can escape.

Do you know why your clothes were torn off and you were abused? It was because of your terrible sins.

You were married to me, but you were unfaithful. You even became a prostitute by worshipping disgusting gods on hilltops and in fields. So I'll rip off your clothes and leave you naked and ashamed for everyone to see. You are doomed! Will you ever be worthy to worship me again?

This punishment will happen because of the horrible things your King Manasseh did. And you will be disgusting to all nations on earth.

I will punish them with a terrible disaster, and everyone on earth will tremble when they hear about it. I will force the people of Judah to go to foreign countries, where they will be cursed and insulted.

But when our ancestors took over the land, they did not obey you. And now you have punished Israel with disaster.

You have disobeyed me by not giving your slaves their freedom. So I will give you freedom—the freedom to die in battle or from disease or hunger. I will make you disgusting to all other nations on earth.

I heard groaning and crying. Was it a woman giving birth to her first child? No, it was Jerusalem. She was gasping for breath and begging for help. “I'm dying!” she said. “They have murdered me.”

And you'll find they are hard like bronze and iron. They are stubborn rebels, always spreading lies.

Everyone in the city groans while searching for food; they trade their valuables for barely enough scraps to stay alive. Jerusalem shouts to the LORD, “Please look and see how miserable I am!”

Zion reaches out her hands, but no one offers comfort. The LORD has turned the neighbouring nations against Jacob's descendants. Jerusalem is merely a filthy rag to her neighbours.

Zion's leaders are silent. They just sit on the ground, tossing dust on their heads and wearing sackcloth. Her young women can do nothing but stare at the ground.

You people of Edom can celebrate now! But your time will come to suffer and stagger around naked.

They will cruelly take away everything you have worked for and strip you naked. Then everyone will see you for the prostitute you really are. Your own vulgar sins

So I, the LORD God, now say to these sisters: I will call together an angry mob that will abuse and rob you.

Foreign nations will realize that the Israelites were forced to leave their own land because they sinned against me. I turned my back on my people and let enemies attack and kill them.

Then I'll strip her naked in the sight of her lovers. No one can rescue her.

or I will strip her naked like the day she was born. I will make her barren like a desert, and she will die of thirst.

Buy your gold from me. It has been refined in a fire, and it will make you rich. Buy white clothes from me. Wear them and you can cover-up your shameful nakedness. Buy medicine for your eyes, so that you will be able to see.

I am the LORD, the God of Israel. I promised to let your family serve me as priests for ever, but now I tell you that I cannot do this any longer! I honour anyone who honours me, but I put a curse on anyone who hates me.
