When God saw that the people had stopped doing evil things, he had pity and did not destroy them as he had planned.

Then he sent an angel to destroy the city of Jerusalem. But just as the angel was about to do that, the LORD felt sorry for all the suffering he had caused the people, and he told the angel, “Stop! They have suffered enough.” This happened at the threshing place that belonged to Araunah the Jebusite.

So even though the LORD had threatened to destroy the people, he changed his mind and let them live.

If you don't confess your sins, you will be a failure. But God will be merciful if you confess your sins and give them up.

The LORD God is waiting to show how kind he is and to have pity on you. The LORD always does right; he blesses those who trust him.

If I threaten to uproot and shatter an evil nation

and that nation turns from its evil, I will change my mind.

then read it to the people of Judah. Perhaps they will stop sinning when they hear what terrible things I plan for them. And if they turn to me, I will forgive them.”

I am sorry that I had to punish you, and so I now tell you to stay here in Judah, where I will plant you and build you up, instead of tearing you down and uprooting you.

Don't rip your clothes to show your sorrow. Instead, turn back to me with broken hearts. I am merciful, kind, and caring. I don't easily lose my temper, and I don't like to punish.

Then the LORD felt sorry and answered, “I won't let it be destroyed.”

Again the LORD felt sorry and answered, “I won't let it be destroyed.”

In that city of Nineveh there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell right from wrong, and many cattle are also there. Don't you think I should be concerned about that big city?

So he prayed: Our LORD, I knew from the very beginning that you wouldn't destroy Nineveh. That's why I left my own country and headed for Spain. You are a kind and merciful God, and you are very patient. You always show love, and you don't like to punish anyone, not even foreigners.

The people of Nineveh will also stand there with you and condemn you. They turned to God when Jonah preached, and yet here is something far greater than Jonah.

The younger son got up and started back to his father. But when he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt sorry for him. He ran to his son and hugged and kissed him.
