Some of the Pharisees said, “This man Jesus doesn't come from God. If he did, he would not break the law of the Sabbath.” Others asked, “How could someone who is a sinner perform such a miracle?” Since the Pharisees could not agree among themselves,

“Achan,” Joshua said, “the LORD God of Israel has decided that you are guilty. Is this true? Tell me what you did, and don't try to hide anything.”

When the chief priests and the temple police saw him, they yelled, “Nail him to a cross! Nail him to a cross!” Pilate told them, “You take him and nail him to a cross! I don't find him guilty of anything.”

Christ never sinned! But God treated him as a sinner, so that Christ could make us acceptable to God.

The Law of Moses cannot do this, because our selfish desires make the Law weak. But God set you free when he sent his own Son to be like us sinners and to be a sacrifice for our sin. God used Christ's body to condemn sin.

They answered, “He is a criminal! That's why we brought him to you.”

You will be chased out of the Jewish meeting places. And the time will come when people will kill you and think they are doing God a favour.

I cannot speak with you much longer, because the ruler of this world is coming. But he has no power over me.

Jesus answered, “I don't have a demon in me. I honour my Father, and you refuse to honour me.

Can any of you accuse me of sin? If you cannot, why won't you have faith in me? After all, I am telling you the truth.

The Father wants all people to honour the Son as much as they honour him. When anyone refuses to honour the Son, that is the same as refusing to honour the Father who sent him.

Everyone who saw this started grumbling, “This man Zacchaeus is a sinner! And Jesus is going home to eat with him.”

So the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law of Moses started grumbling, “This man is friendly with sinners. He even eats with them.”

The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this and said to himself, “If this man really were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him! He would know that she is a sinner.”

The soldiers also nailed two criminals on crosses, one to the right of Jesus and the other to his left.

If you tremble when the LORD speaks, listen to what he says: “Some of your own people hate and reject you because of me. They make fun and say, ‘Let the LORD show his power! Let us see him make you truly happy.’ But those who say these things will be terribly ashamed.”

Now you must confess your sins to the LORD God of your ancestors and obey him. Divorce your foreign wives and don't have anything to do with the rest of the foreigners who live around here.

The man replied, “I don't know if he is a sinner or not. All I know is that I used to be blind, but now I can see!”

At that same moment there was a terrible earthquake that destroyed a tenth of the city. Seven thousand people were killed, and the rest were frightened and praised the God who rules in heaven.
