On each of the first seven days of the festival, Ezra read to the people from God's Law. Then on the eighth day, everyone gathered for worship, just as the Law had said they must.

Then I lift my hands in prayer, because my soul is a desert, thirsty for water from you.

In my heart, I am thirsty for you, the living God. When will I see your face?

You are my God. I worship you. In my heart, I long for you, as I would long for a stream in a scorching desert.

Wisdom shouts in the streets wherever crowds gather.

With great understanding, Wisdom is calling out

I love everyone who loves me, and I will be found by all who honestly search.

She stands by the city gate where everyone enters the city, and she shouts:

She has sent her servant women to announce her invitation from the highest hills:

My bride, my very own, I come to my garden and enjoy its spices. I eat my honeycomb and honey; I drink my wine and milk. Eat and drink until you are drunk with love.

With great joy, you people will get water from the well of victory.

Speak kindly to Jerusalem and announce: Your slavery is past; your punishment is over. I, the LORD, made you pay double for your sins.”

Someone told me to shout, and I asked, “What should I shout?” We humans are merely grass, and we last no longer than wild flowers.

I will bless the thirsty land by sending streams of water; I will bless your descendants by giving them my Spirit.

If you are thirsty, come and drink water! If you don't have any money, come, eat what you want! Drink wine and milk without paying a penny.

Pay close attention! Come to me and live. I will promise you the eternal love and loyalty that I promised David.

Shout the message! Don't hold back. Say to my people Israel: You've sinned! You've turned against the LORD.

Our LORD, you are the one who gives me strength and protects me like a fortress when I am in trouble. People will come to you from distant nations and say, “Our ancestors worshipped false and useless gods,

to go to Jerusalem and tell everyone that he had said: When you were my young bride, you loved me and followed me through the barren desert.

Wherever this water flows, there will be all kinds of animals and fish, because it will bring life and fresh water to the Dead Sea.

For seven days, sacrifices must be offered on the altar. The eighth day is also to be a day of complete rest, as well as a time of offering sacrifices on the altar and of coming together for worship.

Remember to begin the Festival of Shelters on the fifteenth day of the seventh month after you have harvested your crops. Celebrate this festival for seven days in honour of me and don't do any work on the first day or on the day following the festival.

I am the LORD, and it makes sense to respect my power to punish. So listen to my message for the city of Jerusalem:

The LORD All-Powerful will protect his people, and they will trample down the sharpshooters and their slingshots. They will drink and get rowdy; they will be as full as a bowl at the time of sacrifice.

On the eighth day, you must once again rest from your work and come together for worship.

If you are tired from carrying heavy burdens, come to me and I will give you rest.

John was the one the prophet Isaiah was talking about, when he said, “In the desert someone is shouting, ‘Get the road ready for the Lord! Make a straight path for him.’ ”

God blesses those people who want to obey him more than to eat or drink. They will be given what they want!

John answered in the words of the prophet Isaiah, “I am only someone shouting in the desert, ‘Get the road ready for the Lord!’ ”

“I am the way, the truth, and the life!” Jesus answered. “Without me, no one can go to the Father.

Jesus answered, “You don't know what God wants to give you, and you don't know who is asking you for a drink. If you did, you would ask me for the water that gives life.”

“Sir,” the woman said, “you don't even have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where are you going to get this life-giving water?

But no one who drinks the water I give will ever be thirsty again. The water I give is like a flowing fountain that gives eternal life.”

but you refuse to come to me for eternal life.

Jesus replied: I am the bread that gives life! No one who comes to me will ever be hungry. No one who has faith in me will ever be thirsty.

Everything and everyone that the Father has given me will come to me, and I won't turn any of them away.

My flesh is the true food, and my blood is the true drink.

As Jesus was teaching in the temple, he shouted, “Do you really think you know me and where I came from? I didn't come on my own! The one who sent me is truthful, and you don't know him.

You cannot drink from the cup of demons and still drink from the Lord's cup. You cannot eat at the table of demons and still eat at the Lord's table.

and drank the same spiritual drink, which flowed from the spiritual rock that followed them. That rock was Christ.

After the meal, Jesus took a cup of wine in his hands and said, “This is my blood, and with it God makes his new agreement with you. Drink this and remember me.”

Some of us are Jews, and others are Gentiles. Some of us are slaves, and others are free. But God's Spirit baptized each of us and made us part of the body of Christ. Now we each drink from that same Spirit.

Don't destroy yourself by getting drunk, but let the Spirit fill your life.

Everything is finished! I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give water from the life-giving fountain to everyone who is thirsty.

The angel showed me a river that was crystal clear, and its waters gave life. The river came from the throne where God and the Lamb were seated.

The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Everyone who hears this should say, “Come!” If you are thirsty, come! If you want life-giving water, come and take it. It's free!
