You brought hard times on your people, and you gave us wine that made us stagger.

Enemies poisoned my food, and when I was thirsty, they gave me vinegar.

You hold in your hand a cup filled with wine, strong and foaming. You will pour out some for every sinful person on this earth, and they will have to drink until it is gone.

You gave us tears for food, and you made us drink them by the bowlful.

When that day comes, everyone who is proud will be put down. Only the LORD will be honoured.

Stop trusting the power of humans. They are all going to die, so how can they help?

You prophets in Jerusalem have spread evil everywhere. That's why I, the LORD, promise to give you bitter poison to eat and drink.

War and hunger and disease will strike them, until they finally disappear from the land that I gave them and their ancestors.

The LORD God of Israel showed me a vision in which he said, “Jeremiah, here is a cup filled with the wine of my anger. Take it and make every nation drink some.

Instead of watching over you, I will watch for chances to harm you. Some of you will die in war, and others will starve to death.

Their armies will crush and kill you, and you will face the disaster that my anger brings.

The people of Judah say to each other, “What are we waiting for? Let's run to a town with walls and die there. We rebelled against the LORD, and we were sentenced to die by drinking poison.

Just thinking of my troubles and my lonely wandering makes me miserable.

A third of you will die here in Jerusalem from disease or starvation. Another third will be killed in war. And I will scatter the last third of you in every direction, then track you down and kill you.

After you attack the brick that stands for Jerusalem, burn one pile of your hair on the brick. Chop up the second pile and let the small pieces of hair fall around the brick. Throw the third pile into the wind, and I will strike it with my own sword.

The LORD will let you and your king be taken captive to a country that you and your ancestors have never even heard of, and there you will have to worship idols made of wood and stone.

So make sure that everyone in your tribe remains faithful to the LORD and never starts worshipping gods of other nations. If even one of you worships idols, you will be like the root of a plant that produces bitter, poisonous fruit.

The name of the star was Bitter, and a third of the water turned bitter. Many people died because the water was so bitter.
