I heard the LORD reply, “When I have finished, Jerusalem and the towns of Judah will be piles of ruins where only jackals live.”

In front of his friends and the Samaritan army he said, “What is this feeble bunch of Jews trying to do? Are they going to rebuild the wall and offer sacrifices all in one day? Do they think they can make something out of this pile of scorched stones?”

Be wise! Remember this and think about the kindness of the LORD.

But you crushed us, and you covered us with deepest darkness where wild animals live.

Our God, foreign nations have taken your land, disgraced your temple, and left Jerusalem in ruins.

Hyenas and wolves will howl from Babylon's fortresses and beautiful palaces. Its time is almost up!

You have destroyed the fortress of our enemies, leaving their city in ruins. Nothing in that foreign city will ever be rebuilt.

Its palaces and fortresses will be covered with thorns; only wolves and ostriches will make their home there.

I will make the message of my prophets come true. They are saying, “Jerusalem will be filled with people, and the LORD will rebuild the towns of Judah.”

Just watch while I send for the kings of the north. They will attack and capture Jerusalem and other towns, then set up their thrones at the gates of Jerusalem.

“Sounds of destruction rumble from the north like distant thunder. Soon our towns will be ruins where jackals live.”

They will ask, “Why has the LORD our God threatened us with so many disasters? Have we done something wrong or sinned against him?”

This country will be as empty as a desert, because I will make all of you the slaves of the king of Babylonia for seventy years.

I started with Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, and the king and his officials were removed from power in disgrace. Everyone still makes insulting jokes about them and uses their names as curse words.

years ago when Hezekiah was king of Judah, a prophet named Micah from the town of Moresheth had said: “I, the LORD All-Powerful, say Jerusalem will be ploughed under and left in ruins. Thorns will cover the mountain where the temple now stands.”

The LORD said: I have made my decision, and I won't change my mind. This land will be destroyed, although not completely. The sky will turn dark, and the earth will mourn.

I am the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel. You saw how I destroyed Jerusalem and the towns of Judah. They lie empty and in ruins today,

Only jackals will live where your villages once stood. I, the LORD, have spoken.

The attack on the Babylonians will come from the north; they and their animals will run, leaving the land empty.

Babylon will be a pile of rubble where only jackals live. People will laugh, but they will be afraid to walk among the ruins.

If medicine and doctors may be found in Gilead, why aren't my people healed?

The roads to Zion mourn because no one travels there to celebrate the festivals. The city gates are deserted; priests are weeping. Young women are raped; Zion is in sorrow!

The LORD had no mercy! He destroyed the homes of Jacob's descendants. In his anger he tore down every walled city in Judah; he toppled the nation together with its leaders, leaving them in shame.

We are terrified and trapped, caught and crushed.”

Your land will become so desolate that even your enemies who settle there will be shocked when they see it.

So the LORD will leave Samaria in ruins— merely an empty field where vineyards are planted. He will scatter its stones and destroy its foundations.

And so, because of you, Jerusalem will be ploughed under and left in ruins. Thorns will cover the mountain where the temple now stands.

Jerusalem, this will happen because you followed the sinful example of kings Omri and Ahab. Now I will destroy you and your property. Then the people of every nation will make fun and insult you.

has become a scorching desert of salt and sulphur, where nothing is planted, nothing sprouts, and nothing grows. It will be as lifeless as the land around the cities of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, after the LORD became angry and destroyed them.

The angel shouted, “Fallen! Powerful Babylon has fallen and is now the home of demons. It is the den of every filthy spirit and of all unclean birds, and every dirty and hated animal.
