But when I beg for relief and light, all I receive are disaster and darkness.

A destroying army marches along desert roads and attacks everywhere. They are my deadly sword; no one is safe from them.

Have you rejected Judah, LORD? Do you hate Jerusalem? Why did you strike down Judah with a fatal wound? We had hoped for peace and a time of healing, but all we got was terror.

I said, “You are the LORD God. So why have you fooled everyone, especially the people of Jerusalem? Why did you promise peace, when a knife is at our throats?”

All they ever offer to my deeply wounded people are empty hopes for peace.

You will be terrified and will desperately look for peace—but there will be no peace.

Everyone in Maroth hoped for the best, but the LORD sent disaster down on Jerusalem.

People will think they are safe and secure. But destruction will suddenly strike them like the pains of a woman about to give birth. And they won't escape.
