Ever since your king heard about this army, he has been weak with fear; he twists and turns in pain like a woman giving birth.

You people of Damascus have lost your courage, and in panic you turn to run, gripped by fear and pain.

I heard groaning and crying. Was it a woman giving birth to her first child? No, it was Jerusalem. She was gasping for breath and begging for help. “I'm dying!” she said. “They have murdered me.”

Can men give birth? Then why do I see them looking so pale and clutching their stomachs like women in labour?

You once trusted them to help, but now I'll let them rule you. What do you say about that? You will be in pain like a woman giving birth.

Morning, noon, and night an overwhelming flood will wash you away. The terrible things that happen will teach you this lesson:

I'm in terrible pain like a woman giving birth. I'm shocked and hurt so much that I can't hear or see.

People will think they are safe and secure. But destruction will suddenly strike them like the pains of a woman about to give birth. And they won't escape.

When I heard this message, I felt weak from fear, and my lips quivered. My bones seemed to melt, and I stumbled around. But I will patiently wait. Some day those vicious enemies will be struck by disaster.

Those who live in the palace panelled with cedar will groan with pain like women giving birth.

They trembled all over like women giving birth

and they were completely puzzled. Now the king was more afraid than ever before, and his face turned white as a ghost.

Your cities and fortresses will be captured, and your warriors gripped by fear.

Your hands will tremble, and your knees will go limp.
