I will punish Marduk, the god of Babylon, and make him vomit everything he gobbled up. Then nations will no longer bring him gifts, and Babylon's walls will crumble.

Nebuchadnezzar also carried off many of the valuable things in the LORD's temple, and he put them in his palace in Babylon.

Then God will make them lose the wealth they gobbled up.

In the future, the mountain with the LORD's temple will be the highest of all. It will reach above the hills; every nation will rush to it.

Now I see column after column of cavalry troops.” Straight away someone shouted, “Babylon has fallen! Every idol in the city lies broken on the ground.”

When you see this, your faces will glow; your hearts will pound and swell with pride. Treasures from across the sea and the wealth of nations will be brought to you.

Attack from every side! Babylon surrenders! The enemy tears down its walls and towers. I am taking my revenge by doing to Babylon what it did to other cities.

Idols are merely a joke, and when the time is right, they will be destroyed.

The people of Jerusalem say, “King Nebuchadnezzar made us panic. That monster stuffed himself with us and our treasures, leaving us empty— he gobbled up what he wanted and spat out the rest.

The time will come when I will punish Babylon's false gods. Everyone there will die, and the whole nation will be disgraced,

Although Babylon's walls reach to the sky, the army I send will destroy that city. I, the LORD, have spoken.

The thick walls of that city will be torn down, and its huge gates burnt. Everything that nation worked so hard to gain will go up in smoke.

The Lord let Nebuchadnezzar capture Jehoiakim and take away some of the things used in God's temple. And when the king returned to Babylonia, he put these things in the temple of his own god.

And I won't allow people of any nation or race to say anything against their God. Anyone who does will be chopped up and their houses will be torn down, because no other god has such great power to save.

King Nebuchadnezzar sent the following letter to the people of all nations and races on the earth: Greetings to all of you!

Your Majesty, that tree is you. Your glorious reputation has reached heaven, and your kingdom covers the earth.

God did such great things for him that people of all nations and races shook with fear. Your father had the power of life or death over everyone, and he could honour or ruin anyone he chose.

Then Darius the Mede, who was sixty-two years old, took over his kingdom.
