Long ago you left me and broke all ties between us, refusing to be my servant. Now you worship other gods by having sex on hilltops or in the shade of large trees.

A bride could not forget to wear her jewellery to her wedding, but you have forgotten me day after day.

You leaders of my people are like shepherds that kill and scatter the sheep.

On hilltops, we worshipped idols and made loud noises, but it was all for nothing— only you can save us.

When Josiah was king, the LORD said: Jeremiah, the kingdom of Israel was like an unfaithful wife who became a prostitute on the hilltops and in the shade of large trees.

Now it is empty, without people or animals. But when that time comes, shepherds will take care of their flocks in pastures near every town in the hill country, in the foothills to the west, in the Southern Desert, in the land of the Benjamin tribe, and around Jerusalem and the towns of Judah. I, the LORD, have spoken.

Israel is a flock of sheep scattered by hungry lions. The king of Assyria first gobbled Israel up. Then Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylonia, crunched on Israel's bones.

But I will bring Israel back to its own land. The people will be like sheep eating their fill on Mount Carmel and in Bashan, in the hill country of Ephraim and in Gilead.

Those prophets refuse to be honest. They tell my people there will be peace, even though there's no peace to be found. They are like workers who think they can fix a shaky wall by covering it with paint.

They will be safe as they feed on grassy meadows and green hills.

I promise to take care of them and keep them safe,

to look for those that are lost and bring back the ones that wander off, to bandage those that are hurt and protect the ones that are weak. I will also slaughter those that are fat and strong, because I always do right.

Go only to the people of Israel, because they are like a flock of lost sheep.

Jesus said, “I was sent only to the people of Israel! They are like a flock of lost sheep.”

When he saw the crowds, he felt sorry for them. They were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

You had wandered away like sheep. Now you have returned to the one who is your shepherd and protector.
