He captured every one of the fortified cities in Judah and then marched to Jerusalem.

The LORD sent King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia to attack Jerusalem. Nebuchadnezzar killed the young men who were in the temple, and he showed no mercy to anyone, whether man or woman, young or old. God let him kill everyone in the city.

You were a choice grapevine, but now you produce nothing but small, rotten grapes.

and now I will let you be attacked by nations from the north, and especially by my servant, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia. You and other nearby nations will be destroyed and left in ruins for ever. Everyone who sees what has happened will be shocked, but they will still make fun of you.

Meanwhile, the Babylonian army had burnt the houses in Jerusalem, including the royal palace, and they had broken down the city walls.

The LORD said: I have made my decision, and I won't change my mind. This land will be destroyed, although not completely. The sky will turn dark, and the earth will mourn.

So don't be afraid, even though now you deserve to be punished and have been scattered among other nations. But when I destroy them, I will protect you. I, the LORD, have spoken.

In every way, Judah and Israel have been unfaithful to me.

The LORD said: Jeremiah, the enemy army won't kill everyone in Judah.

Why shouldn't I punish the people of Judah?

Some of them will survive the war, the starvation, and the deadly diseases. That way, they will be able to tell foreigners how disgusting their sins were, and that it was the LORD who punished them in this way.

Or suppose I send an enemy to attack a sinful nation and kill its people and livestock.

Then the LORD said, “Name him Lo-Ammi, because these people are not mine, and I am not their God.”

My eyes have seen what a sinful nation you are, and I'll wipe you out. But I will leave a few of Jacob's descendants. I, the LORD, have spoken!

This made the king so furious that he sent an army to kill those murderers and burn down their city.
