Jerusalem is as sinful as Ahab and the people of Samaria were. So I will wipe out Jerusalem and be done with it, just as someone wipes water off a plate and turns it over to dry.

You saw what I did in Egypt, and you know how I brought you here to me, just as a mighty eagle carries its young.

Cities are destroyed; their gates are torn down.

Then I asked the LORD, “How long will this last?” The LORD answered: Until their towns are destroyed and their houses are deserted, until their fields are empty,

This country will be as empty as a desert, because I will make all of you the slaves of the king of Babylonia for seventy years.

An army will come out, like a lion from its den. It will destroy nations and leave your towns empty and in ruins.”

And when he could no longer put up with your disgusting sins, he placed a curse on your land and turned it into a desert, as it is today.

This disaster happened because you worshipped other gods and rebelled against the LORD by refusing to obey him or follow his laws and teachings.

When I have finished with your land, there will be deathly silence in the empty ruins of Jerusalem and the towns of Judah—no happy voices, no sounds of parties or wedding celebrations.

Some of you people of Judah will be left alive, but I will force you to go to foreign countries, and you will wish you were dead. I, the LORD God All-Powerful, have spoken.

I heard the LORD reply, “When I have finished, Jerusalem and the towns of Judah will be piles of ruins where only jackals live.”

Jerusalem, once so crowded, lies deserted and lonely. This city that was known all over the world is now like a widow. This queen of the nations has been made a slave.

Because of this, I mourn, and tears flood my eyes. No one is here to comfort or to encourage me; we have lost the war— my people are suffering.

our city is in ruins, overrun by wild dogs.

You warned us and our leaders that Jerusalem would suffer the worst disaster in human history, and you did exactly as you had threatened.

I'll wipe out your towns and your places of worship and will no longer be pleased with the smell of your sacrifices.

and let it rest during the time that you are in a foreign country, paying for your rebellion against me and my laws.

And so, because of you, Jerusalem will be ploughed under and left in ruins. Thorns will cover the mountain where the temple now stands.

But my warnings and my words spoken by the prophets caught up with your ancestors. So they turned back to me and said, “LORD All-Powerful, you have punished us for our sins, just as you had planned.”

Moses called the nation of Israel together and told them: When you were in Egypt, you saw the LORD perform great miracles that caused trouble for the king, his officials, and everyone else in the country.

You have seen how the LORD your God fought for you and helped you defeat the nations who lived in this land.
